ORGANIZING TIPS OF THE MONTH: AUGUST 2010
It’s the Small Things
Little details can make a big difference in staying organized. Sometimes you don’t even realize the small things that add up to a big roadblock in controlling clutter. Stuck with an organizing dilemma? Email me and I will offer ideas to make life easier.
- Take a Look: With notepad in hand, write down what pops out at you that bothers you about a room. Focus on making changes to those areas.
- Create a Landing Pad: Instead of dropping keys, cell phone, and sunglasses at random when you come home, set a basket on a table or counter near the door to act as a landing pad. You will always know where your essentials are.
- Keep Handy Things Handy: If you often use scissors, pens, reading glasses, etc. in multiple places, then keep a stock of those things where you use them.
- Put It Back: Take it out, put it back. Cereal box out, cereal box back in cupboard before you sit down. Keep clutter under control by using that simple guideline.
- Corral the Car Clutter: Keep a small container in the front seat to hold weekly coupons, claim tickets, errand lists, and other small items which can clutter your car.
- Date Food: Mark containers you put in the refrigerator with the date you open them. It saves you from guessing the age of open perishables.
- Keep Workout Shoes in the Car: (Also a spare exercise outfit.) You will always be prepared for the gym or trail.
- Sort Mail Standing Up: You can toss, recycle, shred, and file with just a few steps. Prevents unsorted mail pile up.
- Take Ten: Take 10 minutes at the end of the day to do a quick pick up in the family room and kitchen. Clear the counters and sink. Put toys and reading material away. It makes a huge difference in the way you start the next day.
- Out of the Bag: When you buy something, put it away. If a purchase just sits in a bag somewhere in your house, it was not an item you needed and is, in fact, clutter.
