ORGANIZING TIPS OF THE MONTH: JULY 2010
Procrastination
Do you put off until tomorrow something you can do today? Everyone procrastinates some of the time. Too much procrastination in putting things away leads to out of control clutter. It is time to get back on track. Do It Now: If a task takes less than 2 minutes, do it now. Little things add up.
- Do the Worst First: Do your least desirable task first. A burden lifts from your shoulders and you are free to do things you would rather do.
- Put It on the Calendar: You are more likely to complete something you block out time for on your calendar.
- Reward Yourself: If you can look forward to something pleasant after you finish a task, you are more apt to get it done. Choose something that works best for you, whether it is a cup of tea or surfing the internet.
- Get a Nag: Ask someone to hold you accountable to get something done. You don’t want to disappoint.
- Use a Body Double: Sometimes people stay on task when there is someone just sitting nearby. It is almost like magic. Another person present somehow increases the ability to focus.
- Let the Computer Remind You: Set up reminders that pop up on your computer. Do not delete the reminders until the job is complete.
- Take a Step at a Time: The large scope of a project may cause you to procrastinate. Break the job into small, easily managed steps. You will have multiple successes.
- Pick your Peak Time: You know when you are most productive. Don’t be square peg in a round hole. If you are a morning person, don’t try to work at night.
- Don’t Do It: Music to your ears! If you keep putting off a task for weeks or months, then maybe you should give yourself permission not to do it. If it is something that matters, then delegate it or hire the job out.
