ORGANIZING TIPS OF THE MONTH: JUNE 2009
A Better Bedroom
When you enter your bedroom do you feel calm or do you feel overwhelmed? A bedroom is a private place—a sanctuary. Organizing your bedroom will reap tremendous benefits for you. If you need to jump start your project, give me a call.
- What is your Vision: Don’t rush into purging and sorting. Take some time, notepad and pen in hand, and make notes about the way you want the room to look. What is the feeling you want?
- Take a Little Bit at a Time: Set a number of mini-goals for organizing the room. Only take on a project that you can complete in the time you have set aside that day for organizing. If you leave tasks unfinished, you will be frustrated by the mess.
- Empty Completely before Organizing: Whether you are working on drawers, shelves, a closet, or under the bed, take everything out first. Otherwise you will be tempted to just rearrange things and you won’t get rid of the clutter.
- Sort and Purge: Make good use of garbage bags, recycling bins, and donate boxes. Be honest. If you don’t’ use it or don’t like it, let it go.
- If It Doesn’t Belong in the Bedroom, It Doesn’t Belong in the Bedroom: Obvious? You will be surprised. Keep reminding yourself of your goals for the room. It is a sanctuary. Business papers and tax files go elsewhere. Exercise equipment, ditto. I am a firm believer in the bedroom as a TV-free zone. TVs invite bad news and tension into the room.
- Bring in Elements of a Nice Hotel Room: Think of rooms you have seen on travels or in magazine photos which made you feel calm. Duplicate some of those elements in your own room. It doesn’t have to be expensive. Target, TJ Maxx, and Wal-Mart have decorative items which mimic designer goods.
- Storage Doesn’t Have to be Plastic: If you need to store things in full view, use decorative storage containers which complement the theme of the room. Canvas bins and totes look great on shelves. Lidded baskets conceal everything from blankets to extra toiletries. Cost Plus World Market, Ikea, Michael’s, and Hobby Lobby are inexpensive sources for decorative storage.
- Measure Carefully for Under the Bed Storage: Under the bed bins are very handy to use for out of season clothing and shoes, however, they are often a bit too tall to fit. You can use bed lifts to raise the height of the bed frame, which may mean you will need to purchase a longer bed skirt. You can also use zippered plastic bags—either the huge Ziploc bags or those with a real zipper. The plastic bags squish down to easily fit under the bed. Canvas zip bags are also available.
- Contain the Bedside Clutter: If you enjoy reading in bed, you may also have a pile of magazines and books waiting for your attention on the bedside table or on the floor. Restore visual calm by containing reading material in a basket or bin.
- Don’t Forget the Closet: Even if you have organized the rest of the room and everything looks great, don’t skip the closet. A disorganized closet saps your energy every time you open the door.
