ORGANIZING TIPS OF THE MONTH: JUNE 2010
Expert Organizing Tips
There are many ways to find organizing ideas which work for us. Some come to us through our own experiences. Some come from the experience of others. Here are some I have found. Note the variations in what is successful for different people.
- Go on a negative energy scavenger hunt: Walk through your house and make note of the things that make you frown. Get rid of those things and give your mood a lift.—Mark Stibich, PhD, longevity expert
- Push the Reset Button: When you are overwhelmed, literally take a step back. Pretend to hit the Reset button in yourself by pushing your thumb into the palm of your other hand. Such a simple act makes a big difference in changing your mindset so you can tackle a task.—Elizabeth Hagen, author, Fearless Organizing
- Use a Kitchen Drawer as a Landing Pad: Empty a drawer and use it to hold everything you dump when you arrive home—keys, sunglasses, change. Cuts down on countertop mess.—Marie Ricks, author, Organize as You Go
- Create a Kitchen Annex: Store seldom used kitchen appliances and sewing pieces together in a closet. No use in filling prime kitchen real estate with things you only need a couple times a year. –Christine Vick, cofounder, www.StoreandStyle.com
- Ask This Question of Each Task: “Does it bring me closer to my goal of X?” if the answer is yes, do it. If the answer is no, delegate or delete it. –Sandra Martini, productivity expert
- Gift of Obligation: Ask yourself if you are keeping a gift only because of guilt about giving it away. If so, remember a gift is given without strings or obligations, and the receiver is free to do as they wish with it.—Maria Gracia, founder, www.GetOrganizedNow.com
- Hunt a Treasure: “The positive act of searching for treasures is a more effective organizing method than the negative act of throwing junk away.” Keep the treasure. Non-treasures are discarded or given away. –Judith Kolberg, founder, Atlanta Hoarders Task Force
- Eliminate Superficial Clutter: Do a rapid-fire sort to jump start an organizing project. Look at something only long enough to decide if it is trash or warrants a second look. The bigger the trash pile, the less work going through the keep pile. –Peter Walsh, author, It’s All Too Much
- Touch Everything Once a Year: Separate your home into 10 zones. Take one zone a month, except July and December, touch each thing and evaluate whether to keep it. –Jonda Beattie, author, From Vision to Victory
- Have an Organizing Mantra: “Organizing is what you do before you do something, so that when you do it, it is not all mixed up.” Amen. –A.A. Milne, author, Winnie the Pooh
