Professional Organizer Tips

ORGANIZING TIPS OF THE MONTH: JUNE 2008
Road Trip Organizing

Summer is a popular time to take road trips. Your get-away will go more smoothly if the things you need are organized. Email or call if you need a hand clearing the clutter before you pack the car.

  1. Take everything out of the car, including items in the trunk. Clean the windows, vacuum, and dust the interior.
  2. Sort and purge the things you removed from the car. Toss outdated maps and replace with new ones. Yes, they are handy even if you use MapQuest or a GPS. Put your insurance information, current registration, and emergency numbers together in a protective sleeve in your glove box. Place your car manual, maintenance log, and tire warranty in there also. Do not keep your car title in your car. It belongs in a safe deposit box.
  3. Gather your gift cards together into an envelope or plastic bag and put them in your purse, car console, or container in your trunk so you will have the cards when you need them. Keep them handy but out of clear view. Gift cards are of no use if they are sitting in a desk drawer.
  4. Put retail and restaurant coupons in a large zip bag and slide it into a door or seat pocket. No more missing out on a free entree or 20% discount. Purge the coupons once a month and get rid of expired ones.
  5. If your car doubles as your office, consider getting a seat-top organizer to hold your files and supplies. www.drivingcomfort.com, www.mobilegear.com, and www.cargogear.com all have products for car organization. You can also use a search engine for “front seat mobile office.”
  6. Have a zip bag or plastic bin emergency kit. Fill with adhesive bandages, tissues, saline solution, tweezers, and hand sanitizer. Include gauze pads to press against large wounds.
  7. Use zippered lunch bags or other easily opened/securely closed containers for children’s travel supply kits. Include small puzzle/maze books, pencils, auto bingo cards, soft animals or dolls, travel size games, electronic games. Do not put in anything that will melt or spill. Have separate bags for snacks so crushed crackers and partially empty juice boxes do not get mixed in with the toys.
  8. Make sure whatever you store in your car is secure so items do not become dangerous flying objects in an accident. Keep the deck under the rear window clear. Even a box of tissues can cause injuries when it hits someone after an abrupt stop.
  9. Clear trash out of the car daily. Gum wrappers, expired coupons, empty coffee cups, used tissues quickly make your car a mess. A clean, organized car makes a positive impression about you to your clients and other passengers. It is also a more pleasant atmosphere for you and your family.
