ORGANIZING TIPS OF THE MONTH: MAY 2010
Tips from my Clients
Some of the best organizing ideas come from my clients. They are innovative and creative. I learn something every day from those who tackle their organizing challenges in ways that work well for them The following tips are from my clients.
- Keep an inventory: Grapple your multiple warehouse purchases by listing your inventory on a dry erase board on your garage wall. Make changes on the board as you subtract or add to supplies.
- Command ® hooks to the rescue: Use a closet wall or the back of a door to attach an array of Command ® hooks to hold your necklaces. Jewelry is in view where you select your outfits.
- Index cards for clear boxes: When you have a variety of items in a clear storage box, list the contents in marker on an index card or sturdy paper. Slide it inside against the side of the box. Voila! You can read the contents of the box.
- Daily pocket files: Decide when a task needs to be done or a call needs to be made. Place reminders, bills, invitations, etc. in the file corresponding to the day of the week something needs to be dealt with. If something doesn’t get done, it moves to the next day’s file. This offers a physical and visual task management system.
- Shoe parking: Whether for cultural or hygiene reasons, you may wish to offer a shoe parking area at the family entrance to your home. Set up a bench and a shoe rack to encourage people to remove their shoes before entering. A small sign on the door is a gentle reminder regarding the household shoe policy.
- Dedicated totes: Use sturdy distinctive tote bags as an activity file system to grab as you go out the door. Have separate totes for exercise, errands, work, after school activities, volunteering.
- Greeting card files: Have a box with monthly dividers and a box divided by occasion. As you purchase cards for specific people, label the cards with sticky notes and file by the month you will need each card. When you buy other cards, file them in the occasion box under birthday, get well, etc.
- Hire a hauling service: When you have a big job which involves getting rid of large quantities or unwieldy items, make life easier by having a company remove everything at once. It will save you time and physical wear and tear. Choose someone who donates and recycles.
- Stop, look, and pay your bills: Put your bills on top of your computer keyboard. No checking emails or surfing the web until the bills are paid. A visual cue not to be ignored.
- Do one thing: Ask yourself, “What one physical thing can I do new?” and do it at once. File those bills, haul those newspapers to the recycle bin. Do that one thing first and you’ll be off to a good start.
