- Start small and you will make the best progress toward your organizing goals.
Organize a drawer, rather than try to organize a whole room in one project.
- If file drawers make you feel you are hiding your papers rather than organizing them, then use open crates to house your hanging files. You can easily see the folder tabs at a glance, and you will not forget the files are there.
- Place photos and memorabilia away from your desk. As wonderful as they are, such items are a distraction when you work.
- Make your bed as soon as you get up. The two minutes you spend then helps you to start your day organized.
- Keep phone messages in a notebook instead of on small pieces of paper. No more lost messages!
- Designate zones within rooms. Keep magazines, books, and newspapers in the area where you read. Keep bill-paying supplies where you pay bills.
- Place a basket or bin near the door to act as a collection point for all errand items such as library books, shopping lists, dry cleaning claim checks.
- Keep common tools in more than one place. Screwdrivers and pliers are very handy in the kitchen for small repair jobs.
- Find a good charity that picks up donations at your home. You will be more likely to give away unneeded items, if you know someone is coming to get them at a specific date.
- Find a system that works for you. Some people file, some pile. If you can find something when you need it, you are organized.
